Bootfitting Guide
By Christian Denis of Elite Feet,
November 11, 2000
Intro
Selecting a ski boot can be a very difficult decision.
Often you are drawn to the well-marketed brand that got all the write-ups in the magazines
and was voted "best" by a famous skier. The reality is that the boots the pros
are using are not the boots you will be buying.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when
purchasing boots is not to get caught up in brand names. Furthermore, very few people need
a race boot. You need to get the right boot for your ability and the shape of your foot
(the latter being the more important of the two).
Finding a Bootfitter
Each brand of boot has a different shape. The better the
match between the shape of the boot and the shape of your foot, the less time you will
spend in the shop and more time you will spend skiing. Make sure whomever you are
purchasing your boots from has a lot of boot fitting experience. I strongly suggest
getting your boots at a place close to the ski area. You will pay a little more, but in
the long run it's worth it. I have customers who save $100 on boots in a city store, then
end up spending over $150 to have me correct fit problems. You should be aware that most
high-end shops include any necessary fitting in the price of the boot.
